The quality of inertia, darkness, and ignorance — the guṇa that resists change and perpetuates the status quo. Tamas is the gravitational pull of the known, the comfort of the familiar pattern. In the KALKI system, tamas is the primary obstacle to pattern recognition: it is the force that keeps the practitioner asleep within their own loops.
