The contemplative repetition of Oṃ, the primal sound (pranava) held in the Upaniṣads to be the sonic signature of the Absolute. Oṃ is not merely a word — it is held to be the acoustic ground from which all manifestation arises and into which it dissolves. The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad devotes its entire twelve verses to unpacking its four quarters: the waking state (A), the dream state (U), the deep-sleep state (M), and the fourth (turīya) — the silence beyond. Patañjali's Yoga Sūtras (I.27–28) designate Oṃ as the designator of Īśvara and hold that its repetition dissolves obstacles. This is arguably the single most widely practiced contemplative technique in the Hindu tradition, crossing all sectarian boundaries.

A verse from the Ṛgveda (III.62.10) invoking the radiant principle (Savitṛ) to illuminate the intellect — among the most widely transmitted invocations in the tradition. The Gāyatrī meter itself is one of the principal Vedic meters, and this particular verse has become the most recited mantra in all of Hinduism, performed daily by millions at dawn and dusk. The verse addresses Savitṛ — the impeller, the stimulating principle of the sun — requesting that the divine radiance inspire our understanding. Its ubiquity across castes, languages, and sects is unparalleled in the Hindu ritual corpus.

Alternate-nostril breathing (anuloma-viloma) used to balance the lunar (iḍā) and solar (piṅgalā) vital currents before deeper practice. This is the foundational breath technique of the Haṭha Yoga system, prescribed in the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā (II.7–14) as the first of the eight kumbhakas. The practice is based on the model that the breath flows predominantly through one nostril at a time, alternating roughly every ninety minutes. Nāḍī Śuddhi actively equalizes this flow, producing a state the texts describe as 'sushumna awakening' — a balanced, integrated awareness suitable for meditation. Modern research on the nasal cycle and its relationship to hemispheric dominance provides an interesting parallel.

Contemplative abidance in the recognition 'so'haṃ' — 'I am That' — the non-dual identity of the individual self (jīva) and the absolute (brahman). The Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad (I.4.10) contains the foundational statement: 'aham brahmāsmi' — 'I am brahman.' The so'haṃ formulation reframes this as the natural, ever-present sound of the breath itself: 'so' on the inhalation (He/That), 'haṃ' on the exhalation (I am). The Nāth tradition developed this into ajapa-japa — the unrecited recitation — holding that this mantra repeats itself 21,600 times daily without effort. The practice is deceptively simple: its depth lies not in technique but in the sustained willingness to rest in the recognition it points to.

The wholly internal repetition of a mantra, without movement of lips or breath — regarded as the most subtle and powerful mode of japa. The Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā describes four stages of japa — vācaka (audible), upāṃśu (whispered), mānasika (mental), and ajapa (spontaneous) — each progressively more internal. Mānasika japa is the third stage, where the practitioner maintains the mantra entirely within the field of awareness. The Manu Smṛti (II.85) rates mental japa as ten times more potent than audible repetition. This is the bridge between technique (japa) and meditation (dhyāna) — the point where repetitive practice becomes contemplative absorption.

The thrice-daily Vedic discipline performed at the junctures (sandhyā) of dawn, noon, and dusk — arguably the oldest continuously practiced contemplative ritual on earth. The rite integrates ācamana (water purification), prāṇāyāma, Gāyatrī japa (108 repetitions), and specific mudrās and mantras into a choreographed whole. The Taittirīya Āraṇyaka and the Gṛhya Sūtras provide the earliest textual prescriptions. The ritual's persistence — still performed daily by hundreds of thousands of Brahmin householders — makes it a living artifact of Bronze Age religion. It is presented here as a documented heritage practice with deep contemplative structure, not as a prescription for untrained practitioners.
