What is a Yantra? The Instrument of Inner Journey

The Sanskrit word Yantra means instrument, support, machine, device. It is not a symbol or a picture — it is a functioning mechanism. The Yantra is the graphic, mathematical, and magical representation of the divine, and its purpose is to facilitate an inner journey to the discovery of the Supreme Self.

As documented by Govinda Das Aghori, the Yantra should not be confused with magic or superstition. Many yantras are contained in a square (bhūpura) with four gates. The square represents the material world; the gates are the points of access into the yantra. Geometric shapes, symbols, and numbers inside are like parts of a mechanism. They lead the practitioner gradually towards the center, which represents the Supreme Consciousness.

The tradition recognizes seven categories of yantra according to their use: Śarīr Yantras (of the body — the chakras), Dhāraṇ Yantras (worn on the body as amulets or kavacha), Āsan Yantras (placed under the seat for meditation), Mandala Yantras (nine participating yantras in eight directions with one in the center), Pūjā Yantras (installed in temples or homes), Chhatar Yantras (kept in a pocket or under a turban), and Darśan Yantras (contemplated daily for spiritual welfare).

The Aghori uses yantras primarily in three ways: as objects of Trāṭaka (steady gazing), as ritual instruments during pūjā (worship), and as meditation maps that reveal the architecture of consciousness itself. The Śrī Yantra — the supreme yantra of Tripurasundarī — is the most important yantra in the tradition, and its nine enclosures (āvaraṇa) correspond to nine levels of consciousness, from the outermost square (the material world) to the central bindu (the point of pure awareness beyond all duality).
