Chakra Yantras: The Geometry of the Subtle Body
Śarīr-Yantra — Body Yantras
Each chakra has a corresponding yantra — a geometric form that represents the chakra's energy pattern and can be used as a meditation focus for activating and balancing that center. These are Śarīr Yantras (yantras of the body) and their practice is a bridge between the external geometry of classical yantra and the internal landscape of kuṇḍalinī yoga.
Mūlādhāra (Root): 4-petal lotus, square yantra. Bīja: laṃ. Subsidiary bījas: vaṃ śaṃ ṣaṃ saṃ. This is the foundation — the earth element, the seat of the dormant kuṇḍalinī, the storehouse of all samskāras (impressions). The Aghori works extensively with Mūlādhāra because it is the seat of fear — and fear is the primary obstacle.
Svādhiṣṭhāna (Sacral): 6-petal lotus, crescent moon yantra. Bīja: vaṃ. The water element, the seat of desire and creativity.
Maṇipūra (Navel): 10-petal lotus, inverted triangle yantra. Bīja: raṃ. The fire element, the seat of will and transformation.
Anāhata (Heart): 12-petal lotus, six-pointed star yantra. Bīja: yaṃ. The air element, the seat of compassion and the witness consciousness.
Viśuddha (Throat): 16-petal lotus, circle yantra. Bīja: haṃ. The ether element, the seat of purification and expression.
Ājñā (Third Eye): 2-petal lotus, oval yantra. Bīja: oṃ. The seat of intuition and command.
Sahasrāra (Crown): 1000-petal lotus. Bīja: oṃ (all letters of the Sanskrit alphabet). The seat of pure consciousness, the Brahmarandhra — the aperture through which the individual soul merges with the universal.
The Aghori practice of Chakra Dhyāna involves visualizing each yantra at its corresponding location in the body while chanting the bīja. The visualization is not imagination — it is the activation of a pre-existing pattern in the subtle body. [TRADITIONAL]
The Practice
Sit in a comfortable posture with the spine straight. Begin at Mūlādhāra. Visualize a red 4-petal lotus at the base of the spine. Chant laṃ 16 times. Move upward through each chakra, spending 2–3 minutes at each. End at Sahasrāra. Then reverse, moving downward. One complete round takes 20–25 minutes.
