Phase VII · Aghorādvaita — The Non-Dual State
Systematic Ego Dissolution: The Five Layers (Pañca-Kośa)
Ahaṃkāra-Bhaṅga — Breaking the Five Sheaths
The Taittirīya Upaniṣad maps five layers (kośas) of the human experience, each more subtle than the last: Annamaya (the physical sheath), Prāṇamaya (the energy sheath), Manomaya (the mental sheath), Vijñānamaya (the intellectual/wisdom sheath), and Ānandamaya (the bliss sheath). The Aghori method of ego-dissolution works systematically through each layer, dissolving identification at each level.
Annamaya Kośa: The ego says "I am this body." The Aghori dissolves this identification through Bhasm (applying cremation ash to the body), through the cold bath (demonstrating will over body), through the sāttvic diet (the body as fuel, not identity), and through marana-smṛti (visualizing the body on the pyre). When the practitioner can observe their own body with the same detachment they observe any other object, the Annamaya identification has loosened.
Prāṇamaya Kośa: The ego says "I am my energy, my feelings, my vitality." The Aghori dissolves this through prāṇāyāma (observing that breath operates independently of "I"), through the dhūni (offering one's energy to the fire), and through Kumbhaka (experiencing awareness without breath). When the practitioner can observe their own emotional states without being swept away by them, the Prāṇamaya identification has loosened.
Manomaya Kośa: The ego says "I am my thoughts." The Aghori dissolves this through Mauna (the thoughts continue but the witness does not engage), through Trāṭaka (concentration proves that the mind can be directed rather than being the director), and through japa (the mantra replaces the mind's default chatter with a chosen vibration). When the practitioner can observe the mind thinking without believing "these are MY thoughts," the Manomaya identification has loosened.
Vijñānamaya and Ānandamaya Kośas: The dissolution of the two subtlest layers is not achieved through technique but through the accumulated effect of all previous practices. The intellectual framework ("I understand non-duality") dissolves when understanding is replaced by direct experience. The bliss sheath ("I feel spiritual") dissolves when even the most refined spiritual experience is recognized as another passing phenomenon. What remains when all five sheaths have been seen through is not nothing — it is awareness itself, naked and free. [TRADITIONAL]
The Practice
Work with each kośa for 2–4 weeks. Annamaya: Bhasm + cold bath + marana-smṛti. Prāṇamaya: Prāṇāyāma + dhūni offering. Manomaya: Mauna + Trāṭaka + japa. Vijñānamaya + Ānandamaya: sit in stillness and observe whatever arises — including the subtlest spiritual experiences — as passing phenomena. Journal weekly.
