The Ego-Letter: Writing and Burning the Declaration
Ahaṃkāra-Dahana — Burning the Ego-Letter
On day 33 or 40 of the 40-day preparation, the sadhaka writes a letter to Bhairava formally surrendering everything they believe themselves to be. This is not a symbolic gesture — it is a precision psychological instrument.
The letter reads: "O Bhairava, I surrender my name, my history, and my fear. Every identity I have constructed — child of my parents, product of my culture, owner of my achievements, sufferer of my wounds — I offer to your fire. May you consume what is false and leave what is real. I do not know what I am. I only know that what I have believed myself to be is incomplete. Initiate me if I am worthy. If not, use me as fuel for the fire of truth."
The letter is then burned — completely, to ash. Fire is the Aghori's primary alchemical instrument. When the paper turns to ash, the declaration transforms: the smoke carries the intention into the Ākāśic medium. The physical act of watching everything you have written about yourself become indistinguishable from any other ash is a direct teaching: this is what you will become, and everything between now and then is temporary.
The emotional aftermath can be intense — grief, relief, terror, exhilaration, or nothing at all. All responses are valid. The practice marks the transition from preparation to the initiation phase. Do not discuss the contents of your letter with anyone. The vow is between you and Bhairava. [ORAL + FIELD]
The Practice
On day 33 or 40, sit alone after evening practice. Write the declaration in your own hand. Read it aloud once. Burn it completely in a candle flame. Sit in silence until the ash cools. Then scatter the ash outdoors — at the base of a tree, in running water, or on the ground.
Materials

- Do not share the contents of your letter with anyone
- If you feel unready after day 33, wait and repeat on day 40
